What a pleasure to see Meanmon13 log into our chat early this week! And what a joy to find that he was going to stay awhile! Meanmon always brings a wave of fresh ideas and a can-do attitude that is inspirational to everyone. Welcome home, MM. We hope you can stay forever!
The other day I heard someone say that our IRC chat participants looked like the ‘U.N. of SWG.’ This is because we have representation from so many SWG projects. And this week we added another!
We welcome Dead1ock to the dev team! Dead1ock did a brief stint with ANH a few years back, and in more recent days he has been working with his own team, OpenGalaxies. He will be working simultaneously on both projects. His plans for ANH include ‘looking at implementing cmake to make crossplatform development seamless for project management and build files.’ Also from OpenGalaxies we welcome Nebula who will be doing wiki and database work. I am hoping we might get some nice java tools from Neb, too! Nebula has been a tester for ANH for a long time, as well as a developer at True Galaxies, and a member of OpenGalaxies. We are glad to see him on our dev side, at last! (Never say never, Neb!)
We also welcome new tester Sojiro. He has made an excellent start with testing and we are pleased that he has joined us.
When we get bug reports that say things like “You can dance, sample, and craft while swimming.†Schmunzel often asks testers ‘How did you think to do that? What on earth put that idea in your head? This week, tester Vasilli wins the prize for the most creative testing and most amusing bug. He dropped a house and then added himself to the ban list! He was still able to enter and leave the house, but could not pick up or drop anything. When he tried to remove himself from the ban list, he got a system message telling him that "You cannot remove the owner from admin list". It was a great find, but since it occurred on Sch’s server, we have tabled the bug until it occurs on the Test Center, which it undoubtedly will!
We have open applications for QA testers at SWGANH, and any interested persons can find the application instructions here: http://www.swganh.com/anh_faq/anhqa/ We are always looking for testers. What makes a good tester? A good tester logs in for the first time and begins to grind out a profession, or starts to craft the products of a profession, or offers to help with data entry. A not-so-good tester logs in for the first time, goes straight to the blue frog, gets Mandalorian armor, and asks “Who is the PvP champ of ANH?†There will be plenty of time for fighting - just not yet. Another little known advantage to being in QA is the high potential of being recruited into other jobs at ANH. We lose more good testers that way.
Last week we reported the merger of the QA IRC channel with the dev IRC channel. Other changes to our work environment include the use of voice chat and for dev meetings and the introduction of Google Wave. Billed as ‘a personal communication and collaboration tool,’ we are using it for - you guessed it! Personal communication and collaboration! And there is plenty of that going on!
As for development this week, Powerking added foraging to scout and paved the way for medical foraging. Schmunzel has been driving herself mad with the rotation function for furniture. Soon we will be decorating our houses! Later in the week, Apathy began implementing the major design changes that have been agreed upon. Dead1ock, Lloydyboy and Schmunzel have been fixing some bugs in their spare time and have made QA very happy by doing so! These included some problems with invitations and containers and system messages.
As a final note, I would like to recognize one of our most dedicated testers, Tom. He has been a tester here longer than ANYONE and has been a true believer through it all. He has a sixth sense when it comes to SWG bugs. He will test for hours on end and then still has the energy and enthusiasm to write an amusing column on our forums and make hysterical movies about testers and testing! He is a purist who would love to kill the blue frog and make his credits entirely on his own. He is one of a kind. Nothing slows him down. He is our own Tomcat Vampstyxx! A gem of a tester.
GOOD THINGS ARE HAPPENING AT SWG:ANH!
